But late 2009, the BC government announced sudden and severe arts cuts, to the shock of Vancouver art organizations and Vancouver artists, particularly before the fast-approaching 2010 Olympics.

As we headed into 2010 with draconian arts cuts, volunteers will continue to be a key resource for survival in the arts, as well as building strategic alliances between two or more arts organizations to pursue common goals, while remaining independent. A strategic alliance is designed to share or merge databases, industry information, referrals and prospects, while jointly absorbing the marketing, sales and distribution costs for audience development.

An example of volunteerism and strategic alliances is ArtWalk Vancouver 2010, which has united the Vancouver art community to participate and thrive. In a time of severe arts funding cuts in BC, ArtWalk Vancouver 2010 provide opportunities for much-needed public exposure for local artists during the 2010 Winter Games.

ArtWalk Weekend Tour February 13 and 14, 2010
Following the opening night, on the weekend of February 13 and 14, artists and galleries in the Downtown Eastside, Gastown and Chinatown are opening their spaces to the public for viewing, sales, demonstrations and education. Visitors are invited to explore the galleries, retail spaces, studios and ten temporary grace-gallery satellite spaces to see the work of over 250 artists, from a full spectrum of disciplines.

As curator of ArtWalk Vancouver 2010, the energetic Rachel Zottenberg boldly secured ten empty, raw spaces from developers and transformed them into grace-gallery satellite spaces for ArtWalk Vancouver 2010, in just a few short weeks. These spaces will be exhibiting the art of grace-gallery artists for the duration of the Winter Games, until February 28, 2010.

In a time of severe arts funding cuts in BC, grace-gallery and ArtWalk Vancouver 2010 provide opportunities for much-needed public exposure for local artists during the 2010 Winter Games. The ArtWalk Vancouver mission is to present an annual event of the highest standard for the enrichment of cultural life in Vancouver. In a few short weeks, the energetic Rachel Zottenberg, Director of grace-gallery, boldly secured empty, raw spaces from developers for grace-gallery satellite spaces, and transformed them for ArtWalk Vancouver 2010. Rachel is known to assist artists in the development and presentation of new visual, performing, literary and media art. She encourages artists to take risks, cross boundaries, ask questions, and develop the culture of Vancouver’s art community.
